The Emmys are moving to Prime Video without the paywall

The six-year streaming agreement changes how viewers will find the ceremony, while a separate Oscars deal shows that the timetable is not the same for every awards show.

The Emmys are moving to Prime Video in 2027, and Amazon says viewers will not need a subscription to watch. The six-year global agreement replaces the ceremony’s four-network rotation with one streaming home, changing where audiences will find television’s awards night.

Amazon promises a live, free stream in more than 240 countries and territories. Its announcement does not settle every viewing detail, including sign-in, supported devices or local access arrangements. No subscription is the promise; ceremony-specific instructions still need to follow.

The old arrangement was formalised in an August 2018 Television Academy agreement. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC extended their contract through 2026, preserving a rotation in which each network took its turn. Fox was scheduled first under the extension, in 2019, followed by ABC, CBS and NBC. The Prime Video term therefore begins after the end of that published network contract.

A rotating host broadcaster and a single multi-year platform create different kinds of continuity for viewers. Under the old agreement, remembering which network carried the previous ceremony was not enough to identify the following year’s destination. The new arrangement removes that annual handover for the length of Amazon’s deal. It also separates the ceremony’s distribution home from the many networks and platforms whose programmes it recognises.

The Emmys are not the only major ceremony making a streaming move. The film Academy’s YouTube agreement begins with the 101st Oscars in 2029 and continues through 2033. That is two years after the Emmys’ announced Prime Video start. The Academy says the Oscars will be live and free on YouTube worldwide. Its existing Disney ABC partnership continues through the 100th Oscars in 2028, so viewers have two more ceremonies under that arrangement before the switch.

The Oscars package extends beyond the main ceremony to red-carpet coverage, backstage material and other Academy events, including the Governors Awards and the nominations announcement. It also calls for language-access features such as captioning and multiple audio tracks. Those are provisions of the Oscars announcement; they cannot automatically be treated as confirmed Emmys features just because both shows are heading to technology companies.

For viewers, the two deals offer a useful calendar: the Emmys’ announced switch comes in 2027, the Oscars’ in 2029. Neither statement requires treating every awards show as one subscription bundle. The next practical checkpoint for the Emmys is the ceremony-specific viewing information that turns the free-streaming promise into a link audiences can actually open.
