Hexed’s directors had to stop thinking like parents

Disney’s mother-daughter story changed perspective when its makers revisited their teenage selves.

Hexed’s filmmakers initially sympathized with the mother. As parents themselves, they kept taking Alice’s side, according to Disney’s October production interview. Choosing her teenage daughter Billie as the viewpoint character meant returning to feelings they remembered from their own adolescence.

Hailee Steinfeld voices sixteen-year-old Billie, while Rashida Jones plays Alice. Disney’s synopsis gives their conflict a magical dimension: Alice has kept her daughter’s abilities suppressed since childhood. The filmmakers’ choice puts the audience alongside the teenager living under those restrictions.

Disney schedules Hexed for cinemas on November 25, 2026. The interview describes how the story was developed, ahead of that release.
