Extra Geography began with just four pages. At an October BAFTA panel, the filmmakers explained how a Rose Tremain short story grew into Molly Manners’ debut feature.

Sarah Brocklehurst is the producer and Miriam Battye the screenwriter. The academy's account says Battye brought Tremain's story to Brocklehurst, and that the three discussed the adaptation together.

Manners told the panel she was pulled in by the script's frank picture of teenage girls. Battye said memories from her own youth, and the sharpness of those feelings, shaped what she wrote, BAFTA reported.
