The new iPad mini hides a speaker trick inside its water-resistant design

The IP67 mark reflects a one-meter lab test, and Apple excludes liquid damage from the standard warranty.

Apple says a sealed Acoustic Display helps the new iPad mini reach an IP67 rating, combining its new speaker layout with water and dust resistance. The company pairs woofers through the screen for stronger bass and more volume, and it hides tweeters between the glass and the aluminum enclosure. Apple's announcement also describes an 8.5-inch OLED display.

That rating has limits. Apple’s footnote describes laboratory testing at a depth of one meter for 30 minutes. Resistance can deteriorate with normal wear, and the standard warranty excludes liquid damage. Apple also warns against charging the device while it is wet.

Apple lists the US Wi-Fi model at $699, and says the new mini begins arriving on November 6.
