GTA 6 is coming for your PS5’s free space

Sony’s preload guidance asks for at least 212GB free, and a spare USB drive cannot run the PS5 game directly.

GTA 6 is still weeks away, but PS5 owners already have a reason to look through their installed games. Sony’s preload announcement asks players to clear at least 212GB before downloading ahead of launch.

Pre-download opens to PS5 preorder holders at local midnight on November 10, ahead of the scheduled November 19 release. That space requirement is Sony’s preparation guidance, rather than a measured final install size.

Clearing space does not necessarily mean deleting everything. Sony’s USB storage guidance says PS5 games can be moved to an external USB drive for storage, freeing room on the console. They must be copied back before you play them. PS4 games work differently: those can run directly from USB extended storage.

A compatible internal M.2 expansion gives PS5 owners another option. Sony’s installation guide says that storage can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games, along with media apps. It has compatibility and cooling requirements, so a spare drive is not automatically suitable.

For anyone preparing to preload, the useful distinction is where a game can be kept versus where it can run. Moving an older PS5 game to USB can make room; leaving a PS5 game on that USB drive does not make it playable there.
